COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA) -- The oldest operating airport in the world is located in Prince George's County. It's College Park Airport, made famous by a Wright Brother in the early 1900's.

In Friday's Extra Mile report, Monika Samtani tells us the airport now houses award-winning local police officers as well. The hanger serves as a second home for the aviation unit of the Prince George's County Police Department. During their 10-hour long shifts they are the eyes in the sky helping out the ground troops from Air 1, one of the quietest helicopters, which goes from 0 to 120 mph in under 10 seconds. They use thermal images from a mounted camera to help them see...and they have won awards for their surveillance work.

The awards are given at the Airborne Law Enforcement Convention in Nevada. This year the crew was also given $1,000 to donate to a charity of their choice, and the officers chose HEROES, Inc., to help D.C. area families of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.
