FAUQUIER COUNTY, Va. (WUSA) - A teenage boy was killed Monday morning and his sister suffered serious injuries after the car they were in lost control and struck a tree, according to Virginia State Police.
Police responded to the accident scene around 7:30 a.m. Monday on Rte 644 less than a mile west of Rte. 806.
A 1996 Toyota Camry was westbound on Route 644 when it ran off the right side of the road. The driver had overcorrected, causing him to lose control. The Toyota then crossed back over the roadway and ran off the left side of the road where it struck a tree.
The driver was a 17-year-old Catlett male. He was not injured in the crash.
The front-seat passenger, Ian T. Heflin, 16, of Catlett, died at the scene. The backseat passenger, Brianna E. Heflin, 14, of Catlett, was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The two are siblings.
All three teenagers were on the way to school at the time of the crash. All were wearing their seat belts.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash and charges are pending.
