John Bedwell, Madeline Bedwell, charged in possible animal hoarding case in Lincolnia, Va.

LINCOLNIA, Va. (WUSA) - Two people have been charged in connection with a possible animal hoarding case, according to Fairfax County police.

On Friday at 10:50 a.m., animal control responded to a complaint about a possible case of animal hoarding at 6347 8th Circle in the Lincolnia neighborhood of the county.

According to Fairfax County police, the animal control officer found an overall hoarding situation and called the Fairfax Fire Dept, which went into the building and found toxic air levels in the home. A hazmat situation was declared, and a further inspection showed some structural problems with the building.

Animal Control took six cats, all alive, out of the building. Charges have been brought against the two occupants of the home.

John Bedwell, 68, has been charged with one civil misdemeanor count of being an unfit owner, and five counts of cruelty of animals

Madeline Bedwell, 70, was  charged with being an unfit owner. The relationship between the two Bedwells is uknown at this time.

On Friday evening, Fairfax County Police declared the structure unsafe for human habitation and suspended work for the night, setting traps to catch the remaining cats.
