RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Alexander Semin has agreed to a one-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.

In announcing the signing Thursday, the team said the former Washington Capitals star forward will make $7 million this season.

He's the latest big name to come to Carolina, which acquired center Jordan Staal during a draft-day trade with Pittsburgh.

Even after that trade, the Hurricanes said they wanted to find another elite forward. After coming up short in their pursuit of Zach Parise early in the free agency period, they signed one from a Southeast Division rival.

GM Jim Rutherford says Semin's "elite skill level and ability to score from the wing fill an important need on the ice."

The 28-year-old Semin ranked second on the Capitals last season with 21 goals, 33 assists and 54 points.
