LOUISA, Va. (WUSA 9) -- A dip in the lake for two young Virginia girls took a turn for the worse, when a beaver with rabies bit them.
The 11-year-old and eight-year-old Spotsylvania County sisters are recovering after being attacked while swimming in Lake Anna on Sunday, said Louisa County Sheriff's Maj. Donald Lowe Tuesday.
The Free Lance-Star reports that Lowe said the beaver was shot and killed by the time the police arrived at the scene. Police then released the body of the beaver to the health department. The health department confirmed the animal had rabies and the girls were given shots for rabies.
This is the fourth time in the past decade that a beaver in Virginia has been confirmed to have rabies, said Virginia Department of Health officials.
Lake Anna is the second largest lake in Virginia. Visitors can fish, camp and swim at the lake.
