FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WUSA) -- An 18-year-old male drowned in the Rappahannock River Tuesday night while playing with friends, say Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office authorities.
Deputies arrived on Riverside Drive in Fredericksburg at 9:40 p.m. after the 18-year-old's friends called 911. Witnesses told deputies that six friends were jumping off of a rock into the river on the Fredericksburg side of the river. The friends stated that they had jumped into the river once while 18-year-old Brandon Wichert stayed on the rock. When the friends turned to talk to Wichert they noticed that he was no longer on the rock. The friends began looking for the him along the shore line and the main road when they called 9-1-1.
Stafford County, Fredericksburg City and the Virginia State Police crews searched for Wichert. Divers found Wichert's body in the area where he was last seen in about 8 feet of water.
