(WUSA) -- A Maryland man will serve 30 years in prison for killing a beloved handyman and father of two in Centreville, Va. in 2010.
Twenty-two-year-old Reynard Lazaro Prather of Oxon Hill was sentenced Friday to 360 months for his role in the attempted armed robbery and murder of Jose Cardona. Prather will serve three years of supervised release after serving prison time.
Prather pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, use of a firearm in a crime of violence, and use of a firearm in a crime of violence causing death in the crime.
Prather conspired with two men to rob the owner of a check-cashing facility at gunpoint at the owner's home in Centreville, where the conspirators believed the owner kept the store's money. On May 17, 2010, Prather and another man drove to a shopping center in Virginia so a third man could drop them off at the owner's home. Prather and the another man, armed with semi-automatic pistols, went into the garage to wait for the owner but the owner's son and an employee, Jose Cardona, arrived. Prather and his partner confronted them and there was a struggle. During the struggle, Cardona was shot and killed.
