HAGERSTOWN, Md. (WUSA) - The weekend crash has shaken this community.

All day long, young people have been stopping at this makeshift memorial, trying to make sense of the sudden loss of two lives so filled with promise.

Shattered car parts still litter the ground. And friends keep adding to the memorial. Brendon's batting gloves, his sunglasses, volleyballs for Sam.

The couple was returning from the prom Saturday night in Shepardstown. Sam wanted to change. There's a bit of a rise, then a sharp curve. The car left the road here, skidded along the embankment, and then slammed into the tree. Both teens were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Colliflower was speeding in his Honda S 2000 sports car, but they've yet to release an estimate or how fast he was going.

The Hagerstown paper had named Colliflower the All County pitcher of the year. Kelly was a star in both volleyball and tennis, where she was the No. 1 girls' singles player for the tennis team this spring. Both were seniors on the honor roll.

At Williamsport High School, students say there was just silence and tears on this Monday after the crash. One teacher broke down crying in front of her class. And students tried and failed to make some sense of this.

Brendan's father was here on Sunday, but too shaken to talk.
A spokesman for the Washington County Schools said he is still waiting for news on funeral arrangements for the teenagers.
But it's a reminder to all of us to slow down and stay alive.
