(WUSA) -- Willa Brown was the first African American woman to earn a commercial pilots license in 1937 along with her Master's degree from Northwestern University.

She was so enamored with flying she bought her own plane.

Brown also started a flying school in 1938, training about 200 African American pilots through 1945, including some of the Tuskegee Airmen.
