ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A bill to legalize gay marriage has hit a snag, with the Maryland House of Delegates sending it back to a committee for further debate.

The full House debated the bill for more than two hours on Friday, but did not put the measure to a final vote as planned.

The move comes after several tough weeks that included the bill's narrow passage by the full Senate and a House committee.

The measure would give same-sex couples in Maryland the same marriage rights as heterosexuals.

Governor Martin O'Malley said earlier Friday that he hoped the bill would pass, and he plans to sign it if it makes it to his desk. Maryland would be the sixth state to legalize gay marriage.
