RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Synthetic marijuana and bath salts used to get high soon will be illegal in Virginia.

The General Assembly voted unanimously Saturday to outlaw the use of the chemically treated, smokable leaves, which are known by names such as "Spice" and "K2" and bath salts that are snorted or smoked as a hallucinogen.
Both produce a high but can be legally bought in convenience stores or online.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has said he will sign the bill, which will then take effect immediately.

A dozen states have banned synthetic marijuana, and more than 20 states are considering bans this year. The federal government is working toward banning the chemicals found in the fake pot.

A handful of states also are considering banning the newer bath salts.
