WASHINGTON (AP) -- Vincent Gray has been sworn in as the sixth elected mayor of the District of Columbia.
The new mayor took the oath of office at 11:57 a.m. Sunday.
In his remarks, he said that while some focus on the district's racial and economic divides, city residents have more similarities than differences. And he said D.C. won't reach its full potential until it becomes the nation's 51st state.
Gray campaigned as a more inclusive leader than his predecessor, Adrian Fenty, who was defeated after a single term. Gray and Fenty embraced onstage at the Washington Convention Center.
The Inaugural Gala will be held Sunday evening at 7PM also at the Washington Convention Center.
