WASHINGTON (WUSA)- - DC Water rushed to repair 8 main breaks in just 24 hours. They blame the extreme drop in temperatures and the pipes' old age.
There are 1300 miles of water mains in the city's system. The average age of the pipes is 77 years old.
"Some pipes installed during the Civil War are still in service in this city," said DC Water GM George Hawkins.
Hawkins said crews are on an accelerated schedule to replace the aging pipes, but it will still take 100 years to upgrade the entire system.
