Fort Dupont Park Homicide Victim Identified As Opera Singer

WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Police have identified the murder victim found in Fort Dupont Park on June 9 as 43-year-old Don Diego Jones of Temple Hills, Md.

They say he was an opera singer with the Washington National Opera.

U.S. Park Police officers were called to Fort Dupont Park for a report of an unconscious man around 4:30 Tuesday afternoon. Officers arriving on the scene in the 3400 block of Minnesota Avenue found the victim suffering from an apparent gun shot wound. Park Police notified DC Police Homicide Branch which is now investigating the incident. 

A spokesperson for Washington National Opera tells 9NEWS NOW Jones had been a member of the chorus since 1996.  He most recently sang the role of "Crab Man" in the production of "Porgy and Bess."

Washington National Opera had previously planned a concert in Fort Dupont in celebration of the Juneteeth Holiday on Saturday, June 19.  They will now dedicate that concert, which begins at 3 p.m., to Jones.
