FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Fairfax County Public Schools is repaying the federal government $1 million after an investigation found grant documents had been falsified.

The school system applied for the grant in 2000 to help fund the Gear Up career-awareness program for at-risk students at Glasgow Middle School. The U.S. Department of Education awarded the school system $2.7 million to be given out over five years.

Schools spokesman John Torre says that in 2004, an audit by the school system found that the grant application included forged signatures and other falsified documents. The school system suspended use of the $1.6 million it had used and alerted the Education Department about the issue.

After an internal investigation, the school system amended its application procedures for grants.
