WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Real Washingtonians know that Mumbo sauce is a dc staple and your fried chicken wings likely wouldn't be the same without it. Now an appeals court says our beloved sauce may actually belong to some other town.
Arsha Jones has been making, and bottling this stuff from her kitchen under the name Capital City Mumbo Sauce. She's also taken the lead in a legal battle where a trademark court has ruled a chicago based company select brands, is the rightful owner of mumbo sauce, stripping D.C. from a source of pride.
Her contention has been that mumbo sauce is a generic name and that no one can claim ownership of such a term.
The court didn't see it that way.
mumbo sauce was made popluar throughout the many carry-outs in the district who all serve it as a dressing for fried foods. So you can imagine what D.C. residents had to say about it.
"That's really ridiculous. that's dc's thing," said one resident.
Another said, "I've been to chicago they aint got no mumbo sauce...d.c.'s got the mumbo sauce."
