WASHINGTON (AP) - A federal judge has denied a request from former D.C. Council chairman Kwame Brown to travel out of state.

Brown had asked to travel to North Carolina next month to attend his nephew's college graduation ceremony. His attorney said Brown wanted to stand in for his brother, Che Brown, who is serving a 90-day prison term for bank fraud.

The request was denied Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Richard Leon.

Like his brother, Kwame Brown was convicted of bank fraud. He is serving six months of home detention. Brown admitted lying about his income on two loan applications. He used one of the loans to buy a powerboat.

Brown resigned from office last June after agreeing to plead guilty.
