WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Peak bloom is just around the corner for folks waiting anxiously on the Cherry trees.

Crowds of people are flocking to the Tidal Basin.

Most of the trees are budding and on the brink of full bloom.

Among the throngs of tourists, locals come for a peak too.

"People come from all over the world, it's silly to live here and not participate in something so unique and interesting," said Melanie Sahly, Silver Spring, Md. resident.

Sahly brings her children to see the cherry trees every year.

It gives Melanie's son Cameron, a chance to brush up on his photography skills.

"It's interesting to see the few that are open against the closed ones."

And even though they've come pre-peak bloom they haven't underestimated its beauty even at this stage.

"I thought, well it's worth going anyway. By next week they might be gone."

Fifteen-year-old Cameron Sahly said,"Its kind of a great experience to be down here."

Peak bloom is expected in a few days. They can last up to 14 days depending on the weather.
