WASHINGTON (WUSA)-- In a move that has surprised and electrified the non profit world, Patty Stonesifer has taken the job of CEO of Martha's Table.

Martha's Table is a DC charity that provides services to eleven hundred working and poor people per day. We're talking food, clothing and other family services.

Stonesifer had been CEO for the world's largest philanthropic foundation: the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

At the Gates organization she had about a $39 billion budget. At Martha's table she'll preside over $6 million, 91 employees and 10,000 volunteers.

Already wealthy from her Microsoft stock early on, she'll take no salary at Martha's Table. She also took no pay from the Gates Foundation.

Stonesifer comes onboard as DC non-profits prepare to argue for a piece of the city's recent $417 million surplus that Mayor Gray wants to add to the City's savings bringing its total rainy day account to $1.5 billion.

Marie Breslin, a volunteer at Martha's Table says "the city has social needs".

DC Councilman Marion Barry told WUSA9 that he will introduce a bill allowing Mayor Gray to spend up to $100 million of the surplus on jobs, affordable housing and social services.

Patty Stonesifer told me she wants to see how the city can collectively do something for the 110,000 DC residents living below the poverty level.
