OXON HILL, Md. (WUSA) --  Prince George's County police say a crash involving a Metro bus started when an officer spotted a car suspected to be stolen and possibly connected to purse snatchings at gas stations.

According to Cpl. Maria McKinney, an officer spotted a white Nissan Maxima reported stolen earlier from Neptune Avenue and Audrey Lane in Glassmanor shortly after 9 a.m. Friday. The Maxima was also seen previously in Hyattsville at the scene of purse snatchings at gas stations.

The officer saw the Maxima going past him and made a U-turn to try to stop the vehicle, but the Maxima's driver spotted him and fled, said Cpl. McKinney.

Another officer saw the Maxima speeding and tried to stop it but it continued, zigzagging in and out of traffic. Eventually, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it spun and hit a Metrobus on Southern Avenue and Wheeler Road.

McKinney says three people were inside the Maxima. They were apprehended by police from Prince George's County and D.C. (the intersection is on the county and city line).

A photo tweeted by the Oxon Hill Volunteer Fire Department shows a white car with back end damage and its hood up facing the Metro bus. The Metro bus has a sign for P1 Eastover.

Metro officials told us Metro bus 6182 was struck, and a driver and passenger were transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Fire officials say the area is closed for investigation.
