WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Honda is recalling more than 2.26 million vehicles in the United States and China.

There are issues with the automatic transmissions in it's Accord,  CRV and Element vehicles. The models in question include:

*Certain 2004-2010 4 cylinder Honda Accords

*Certain 2007-2010 CRVs

*Certain 2005-2008 Elements

In the US - the recall impacts 1.5 million vehicles.

The car company says shifting between reverse, neutral and drive can damage a bearing in the automatic transmission system. This is something drivers are likely to do if they get stuck in mud or snow.

Honda says the problem could cause the engine to stall or make the parking gear difficult to engage. The new update will ease the transition between gears to reduce the possibility of damage.

The automaker says it has no reports of deaths or injuries.

Dealers will begin contacting customers by mail starting August 31st. Or, consumers can contact Honda directly after that date by going online to or by calling (800) 999-1099. Select option 4.
