MILLERSVILLE, Md. (WUSA/AP) - Anne Arundel County police say three people have been killed and several injured in a crash that involved five passenger vehicles and a flat bed delivery truck in Millersville.
Spokesman Lt. Glenn Shanahan says the accident was reported shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday near Route 3 South at Route 32. Shanahan says the department's traffic safety team was still on the scene trying to determine how the accident occurred.
Police say two people with life threatening injuries were taken to trauma centers, and four others were taken to hospitals with relatively minor injuries.
The three people that died include Bethany Dawn Dempsey, 37, of Warsaw, VA, and one of her daughters. Her boyfriend Michael Thomas Cullen II remains in critical condition. One of his daughters was killed and his son is in the hospital in critical condition as well, police said.
Jason Nathaniel Pagaypya, 36 who was driving the truck did not sustain any injuries. The other people identified in this accident are James David Cox, 69, Denise Elise Cox, 62, Bernard Melvin Taylor, 59, Patricia Jean Covington, 71, April Leah Avila, 36, Abiola Oluwaseyi Isola, 19, Casey Leanne Steele, 24, and Dana Tiffani Cartwright, 34.
The accident during rush hour snarled traffic for more than a mile. According to an investigation, officials said "As the vehicles neared the MD Route 32 overpass, other traffic began to slow down due to the volume associated with the traffic signal at MD Route 175. The International Truck (Vehicle #1) failed to reduce its speed and struck the Toyota Camry (Vehicle #2) from the rear. The initial collision caused a chain reaction with the other vehicles."
