FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA) -- Perhaps the best thing about our Friday's Hero stories is that the good guys, the unselfish guys, almost always win. However, there's one holiday story still very much in search of a happy ending.

Our Daily Bread has been serving those in need in the Fairfax County area for more than 25 years. The organization hands out baskets of emergency food and other aid to families who might otherwise go without, but at Christmas it tries to do more.

Through the Holiday Program, Our Daily Bread is able to connect individuals, families, businesses and community groups with qualified needy families across the area to provide Holiday meals and gifts for children. The requests for holiday assistance is up 36% this year. This year's Christmas list includes a total of 5,000 families, outpacing Our Daily Bread's capacity to help. There aren't enough sponsors. Executive Director Lisa Whetzel says without the additional support, some families could go without. "Our hands are tied," said Whetzel.
