WASHINGTON (WUSA)--As people from every state arrive in Washington this weekend, one group is celebrating its representation with a little extra shine.

The California State Society helped kick off inaugural celebrations with the group's traditional luncheon and fashion show.

"California is the home of the red carpet, Hollywood, and glamour," said the event's chairwoman, Norine Fuller. "We thought this best portrays our industry."

For the fourth time, CSS partnered with the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM). The outfits displayed at Saturday's show represented the work of students and industry supporters.

Designer Kevan Hall counts among FIDM's alumni, and served as a mentor to the students as they prepared inaugural-themed gowns for the show.

"The fashion Institute has done a really great job turning out students in shoe design, in fashion design, in retail," he said. "It really showcases the students and the school as being a force to be reckoned with."

California pride was on full display during the show, with costumes showcasing Hollywood movies and theater, Barbie, and the sun-and-surf culture of the state. About 700 people watched the show at the Ritz-Carlton ballroom.

"I was just proud to be here today and be representing of our state," said Californian Monetta White.

"This is all California, I think that's what makes it stand out," said U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-California), who also attended the event Saturday.
