WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Bras are supposed to be uplifting, but the results of a15-year study out of France says it's just the opposite. Acccording to the study, bras make your breasts sag.

A sports medicine specialist says he studied more than 300 women between 18 and 35 years old.  According to his research, those who didn't wear a bra experienced a quarter-inch lift.

Ali Cudby, a bra fitting specialist, says you may want to wait before you ditch your bra. The results from the study are preliminary. She also says there are a lot of reasons why women choose to wear bras -- fashion, to make us feel better, for comfort and sort of a societal norm that says this is what we do in our culture.

Cudby says the bra fit mistake most women make is that women wear a bra band that's too big.

"I like to say the band is the foundation of the foundation," said Cudby.  She continued, "It should be carrying 80% to 90% of the support of your breasts. If you have a bra that has a band that's riding up or very loose, then you're not getting that support. like a house, if you don't have the proper foundations everything sags."

Pulling up the straps is not the right answer, says Cudby. "If you're carrying the weight of your breasts in your shoulders, that leads to health problems and that has been documented by a lot of studies that have been tested in the scientific community."
