(AP) -- The big changes coming to the Big East aren't sitting very well with some of the guys who helped strengthen its reputation as the top basketball conference in the country.

Big East alums like Carmelo Anthony, Emeka Okafor and Mark Jackson are lamenting how the league that helped turn them into stars is an unrecognizable mess as the Big East tournament is set to kick off on Tuesday.

Officials announced the plans last week. The seven Catholic schools, including St. John's, Villanova and Georgetown, are forming their own league that will keep the Big East name. UConn is staying with a group of football-based schools that will form a new conference while Syracuse and Pitt are headed to the ACC.

Anthony says he's saddened to see the conference break apart.
