WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Thousands use their SmarTrip cards every day without any problems, and you are not going to hear congratulations when they work, but when they don't, people take to Twitter and email asking for help.
A WUSA9 viewer, Kathy wrote to our reporter Debra Alfarone: "I sent my SmarTrip card off into the Metro abyss a year ago May 29. A Metro kiosk operator told me to put it in one of their envelopes and mail it back, which I did. Never saw it or my $50 again."
WUSA9 also heard from a viewer named Ken from Fairfax. He prefers to take care of the problem in person rather than mail his defective SmarTrip cards which he says, contain a substantial amount of money on them. He says, "Because I work nights, I have left work early in the morning and waited in line 3 times to try and get them corrected but the lines were just too long and Metro doesn't have a location open on weekends."
His work schedule is a hurdle in getting to the Metro in time, "I have tried to coordinate with going on Mondays (I get off work earlier on Monday mornings) only my timing and their delays and problems seem to keep coming up which makes a trip down to DC for a long wait in line or miss a nights work not feasible."
WUSA9 reached out to WMATA yesterday and fixes for these two problems are in the works. We hope to have good news for Kathy and Ken tomorrow.
