NEWTOWN, Conn. (WUSA) -- A sick and twisted hoax sent mourners in a Newtown church running. In the middle of the packed noon mass at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Newtown Sunday, police say the church received a phone call.

They say the caller warned he would shoot up the place. Minutes later, the church was evacuated. Anna Wood from Oxford was there, "I looked up and I said if anything has to happen, protect the kids." Kathy Hatzmann was at the church with her daughter Brianna, "It's beyond incomprehensible that in the midst of all this horror and tragedy, that they're still continuing to put fear in our children."

Chaos reigned outside the church as police directed traffic, and parishioners and well-wishers were turned away. Hatzmann couldn't believe it, "This is church. This is where you're supposed to be safe. You can't be safe at church, you can't be safe in our children's schools. It's a sad thing."

In any other town, news of a threat at a crowded church would be the top story on the evening news. But, this is Newtown - a place already struggling to breathe after 20 6- and 7-year-olds were gunned down in their 1st grade classroom along with 6 adults, in what will forever be called the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre

Hatzsmann knows the horror all too well, and thought this as she left the church, "I didn't want to be another one of those grieving moms."
