WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- You have just a few more hours to get those taxes done and stamped -- or submitted by 11:59 p.m. Here are a couple of thoughts in the final stretch:
Can you race to the post office right before midnight and still make the deadline? It really depends on your post office. Monday, some post offices will keep regular hours, some will close at 7 or 8 p.m. and a few will stay open right until the stroke of midnight -- after that you will have to pay a small penalty.
Still can't get it done? File for an extension on IRS.gov. That action will give you 6 more months to file, but if you owe money then pay now or face penalties.
It is estimated that 11 million people will ask for an extension.
