Utility Imposters Target BGE Customers

BALTIMORE, Md., (WUSA) -- Baltimore Gas and Electric wants to warn customers about scam that involves people posing as BGE employees.

The scammers show up in person at a customer's house or call to try to gain access to into their home or business to steal money, credit card information and other valuables.

The imposters are dressed in "official looking" clothing and carry fake identification. 

The scam also involves calling a customer at home to tell them that their service will be terminated if they do not make a payment by purchasing a "Green Dot" Visa credit card. 

The criminals then tell the customer to call another number and provide the credit card information and the amount on the card.

BGE wants customers to know that the money that is taken from the card is not being used to pay the utility company.

To avoid this scam, BGE says you should ask for the name on the account, the account address and the exact balance of the alleged late payment.

The utility company says that if the individual cannot provide that information, it is a red flag.  And, you should not give any personal or account information to them.
