ARLINGTON, Va., (WUSA) -- Arlington County Police say people claiming to work for local utility companies call up customers and demand money for supposedly unpaid bills.

They say if they don't pay, their service will be shut off.

So far, more than two dozen victims have lost between $100 and $200 in the illegal scheme.

If you receive one of these calls, hang up and call the utility company.  You'll find the company's phone number on your latest bill or go to their website.

Never use the phone number given to you by the caller to verify their credibility.

If you find that you are a victim the scam or a target, Arlington County Police want you to file an online police report.

You can also call the non-emergency police line at 703-558-2222.
