WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- One in three shoppers will buy electronics this holiday season.
While it's not as exciting as unwrapping a new gadget gift, consumers need to research service providers and data plans for those devices, too.
The top overall pick for smartphones among the major carriers Verizon followed by Sprint and T-Mobile.
For devices with 4G capability, however, users seemed to fare best with AT&T.
If you get a smartphone or tablet for the whole family this holiday consider a shared plan.
Survey results show U.S. Cellular tops that category.
And, the survey says the average American household spent more than $1500 on their smartphones and the service in 2012, some users even twice as much.
Unlimited data plans are a thing of the past for most carriers.
So, smartphone users should get into the habit of trimming their data usage and their bills.
And Wi-Fi usage can really pack a punch to your smartphone bill.
So, consider only using Wi-Fi for video streams, video calls, video uploads, music streams and online games.
