WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Customers who may have swiped their credit cards at a Barnes and Noble may want to check their bank statements.

The book retailer says crooks hacked into cash register keypads at 63 of its stores and stole customers' pin numbers.

The security breach happened last month, but the FBI asked the company to keep it under wraps so that the agency could figure out who was behind the crime.

Barnes and Noble has now disabled all of the PIN pads in its stores across the country.
