Washington, DC (WUSA) -- If you receive a phone call informing you that a "free" medic alert system is ready to be delivered to your home and the caller would like to set up a delivery time, be careful.  We have received complaints about the tactics used by these callers.  In addition, consumers who have agreed to these "free" devices discover there are hefty monthly service charges as well as contracts that may be for two years or longer.

We have also heard from consumers whose phone numbers are on the Do Not Call Registry and when they inform the caller of this fact, they are told the company can call them because the product is a medical device.  This is not true!  There is no exemption for this type of company.  Consequently, the company is breaking the law!

Other consumers have called to complain they can't get the calls to stop, and that the callers are very persistent.  Don't cave into pressure and don't believe the devices are free.  Free implies there are no charges to consumers, this is not true.
