WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A year ago, Buddy Check 9 reported on ground breaking technology that would change the way breast cancer is detected and diagnosed.  3D Tomosynthesis was seen as the most significant advancement in breast imaging in nearly four decades.

Now, results of an independent study by Norwegian researchers confirm that the use of 3D Mammography in combination with a 2D Breast Exam finds significantly more cancers than a 2D Breast Exam alone.

Researchers in Oslo, Norway studied more than 12,000 women to determine if 3D screening would find cancers missed by 2D mammography alone.  The results found significant improvements in the detection of invasive and very early non invasive cancers when 3D & 2 D mammography are combined.

Dr. Julie Greenberg, Director of Mammography at Washington Radiology Associates, told us, "The increase in cancer detection was about 27% in their study. The increase in cancer detection for invasive breast cancers, and these are potentially lethal breast cancers, was 40%."

The Oslo study also found a decrease in the number of false positives.

The 3D mammogram happens at the same time as the standard 2D mammogram. The exam is just a few seconds longer in order to capture the 3D images.

In our area, Washington Radiology Associates was the first facility to use the FDA approved 3D mammography system. 3D mammography is FDA approved but not covered by insurance. WRA offers the screening tests to its patients at a minimal cost.

WRA is the largest provider of 3D screening in the country. However, more area facilities are adding the technology to their imaging centers like Sibley Memorial Hospital in Northwest DC and Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington.

Here's a partial list of other area imaging centers with 3D Tomosynthesis:

  • WRA: Washington, DC; Bethesda, Potomac, and Chevy Chase in Maryland plus Sterling and Fairfax in VA
  • Community Radiology's Bethesda Imaging Center in Montgomery County
  • Fairfax Radiological Consultants - the Breast Diagnostic Center in Arlington and FRC in Centreville and Herndon/Reston, VA
  • Johns Hopkins Imaging: Green Spring Station, Lutherville , MD
  • Johns Hopkins Imaging: White Marsh, Baltimore , MD
  • Shady Grove Breast Center, Rockville, MD
  • Sibley Memorial Hospital, Washington, DC
  • V-A Maryland Health Care System
  • Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington.
