WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) - The National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) has set a deadline for finding a cure for breast cancer. The big day is nine years away, January 1, 2020, and the coalition has a plan.

The NBCC website has a clock ticking down the years, days, hours, and minutes left until the end of breast cancer.

President of the coalition and a 23-year breast cancer survivor Fran Visco told WUSA 9NEWS NOW's Andrea Roane, "We're frustrated by the lack of progress, by what we see as an organization, an infrastructure in breast cancer that is no longer focused on the goal of saving lives and ending this disease."

Visco said it is possible to make this goal because of the wealth of scientific progress made so far. She believes now we need to use all the knowledge to stop this killer of some 40,000 women in the U.S. and 500,000 women worldwide.

She added, "Most of the infrastructure in breast cancer is focused on a new treatment, a new drug. Well, really drugs don't make that much impact on mortality in breast cancer. The conversation has to shift from how we can treat it better, how to detect it earlier, to how do we end breast cancer."

The NBCC has developed a five-year strategic plan for a preventative breast cancer vaccine as its first initiative. Over the next 2-years, the Coalition will hold summits and workshops on metastasis and primary prevention.
