DETROIT (USA TODAY) -- Victoria and Steven Wrubel have danced their last dance.

Together 83 years, the Wrubels were believed to have been the longest-married couple in the country, and loved to dance together.

But Vicki, as she was known to friends and family, died Monday at Angelica's Place in Romeo, Mich. She was 102 years old.

Steve said last month that he loved Vicki even before they were married, when she was still Vicki Puvalowski, and they were kids growing up in the small, largely Polish town of Parisville, Mich.

"She was this little girl with curly hair," he said, smiling, remembering when they first met at St. Mary Catholic Church.

Born Dec. 15, 1910, Vicki was one of seven daughters born to Martha and Albert Puvalowski in Huron County. All six of her sisters, Stella Kozfkay, Blanche Rubel, Anna Gwisdella-Pasterveaki, Minnie Maurer, Gertrude Wrubel and Beatrice Chilva, preceded her in death. She and Steve were married Sept. 28, 1929, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ubly, Mich. Vicki enjoyed dancing, playing euchre with friends, cooking Polish dishes and traveling.

The couple had a house in Mt. Morris, Mich., after Steve retired from General Motors. Later, they sold that home and moved to Holiday, Fla. There, the couple were active in the Polish American Pulaski Association.
