MOUNT AIRY, Md. (WUSA9) -- The idea of seceding is getting a lot of attention in western Maryland.

Scott Strelczyk, has formed the Western Maryland Initiative, because according to him the counties of Carroll, Frederick, Allegany, Garrett, and Washington would be better served by becoming their own state.

Strelczyk is arguing that law makers in Annapolis rarely if ever listen to the wishes of constituents in the aforementioned counties. So, he thinks secession is a good idea, and he thinks it could happen.

He said, "We want to form a new state. It has been done 6 or 7 times in the history of the union."

He also added, "What it boils down to is 3 jurisdictions...Baltimore City, Prince George's County, and Montgomery County essentially run the state."

Reaction from other members of the community was mixed.

One man agreed with the idea of secession saying, "It would be nice if Annapolis would listen to Western Counties."

However, Mount Airy's Mayor Patrick Rockinberg doesn't believe a secession would ever take place. Instead, he thinks the movement will simply just bring attention to the disenfranchisement that Western Marylanders face.

He said the movement led by Strelczyk is "just to get people interested in what's happening."

If secession were to happen Strelczyk said the new state could be called Antietam or Augusta.
