BALTIMORE (AP/WJZ) - Firefighters battled a four-alarm fire at a northeast Baltimore church early Friday morning.

Christie Ileto reports there are still hot spots in the church and black smoke could be seen billowing from the building.

Fire department spokesman Ian Brennan says the blaze broke out early Friday around 3:30 a.m. at Northwood-Appold United Methodist Church at Loch Raven Boulevard and Cold Spring Lane.

The flames spread to nearby buildings, including a school. Images from the scene show flames shooting through the church's roof and crews attacking the blaze from outside the building.

Brennan says more than 100 firefighters were still working to control the fire three hours after arriving, but the church's steeple was still intact. He says no injuries have been reported.

Because the fire involves a church, Brennan says the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives will help the city police and fire departments investigate.

Church members say despite the damage, services will resume and likely take place at an education center across the street.
