ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA9) --  Visitors have been gathering at Arlington National Cemetery where John F. Kennedy is buried to mark the death of the 35th president.

There was a steady stream of people paying their respects on Friday.

If you were old enough to remember you know where you were, what you were doing and the emotions on that day November 22, 1963. Many people wanted to mark the occasion by coming to Arlington National Cemetery.

Mark Allen hardly misses his yearly trek to JFK's gravesite. Allen who is from Alexandria says, "I almost always come out here on November 22. But I wanted to especially be here this year."

50 years ago today, he remembers a knock at his 5th grade classroom door.

"It was our history teacher at the door who heard it on the radio. And She came back and very somberly told the class what had happened. It was the most unexpected thing. It was a 9-11 moment. You would've never expect to happen," said Allen.

Judy Koenick comes for a different reason.

"Because 50 years ago it was my birthday. It was my 20th birthday. I was a junior at American University."

And this is where she wanted to be on her 70th.

"My sister asked me why I was going to Arlington on my birthday, I said because I have to."

People have been compelled to be here today.  They wanted to give their respects in their own way whether a respectful kneel or a salute or an impromptu bugler playing taps, they all came.

There were many touching moments and powerful images through out the day as people paid their respects. JFK's final resting spot will continue to draw visitors well past 50 years after Kennedy's assassination.
