(WUSA9) -- Wednesday afternoon, VRE released a message to its passengers who use Electronic SmartBenefits to pay for their tickets.
"Due to the Federal Government shutdown there is uncertainty surrounding the issuance of November SmartBenefits. Allocations made through the SmartBenefits program may be affected. If you currently use CommuterDirect, the Crystal City Commuter Store, the Springfield Commuter Store, or Old Town Transit in Alexandria, please contact those locations directly to verify the status of your November benefits. If your employer is not providing benefits for November or has not released the funds to CommuterDirect, you will need to make other arrangements for the payment of your fare media.
If you know now that you will need a November VRE ticket and are not receiving your normal benefits, please be ready to provide Commuter Direct with an alternate form of payment. If Commuter Direct does not receive a payment for your ticket-Smart Benefits, credit card, cash, or check-they will not issue a November ticket. Please contact CommuterDirect by email at questions@CommuterDirect.com or visit their website at www.commuterdirect.com with any questions regarding your account.
If you allocate your SmartBenefits to the 7-11's at Lafayette Blvd or Deacon Rd, Rick's Roasters at Quantico, The Coffee Club at Woodbridge, or Don's Depot at Broad Run, we hope to have those funds available by the afternoon of Monday, November 4th.
To assist our monthly pass holders, we will extend the grace period for the October Monthly passes through Wednesday, November 6th. If the government reopens and benefits have been restored in time to get the benefits distributed, there will not be a need to extend the grace period."
VRE says that it will notify passengers about any updates.
