MIDDLETOWN, Md. (WUSA9) -- Officials from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office say that a man going through a divorce who shot himself and set his house on fire has died.
The man, identified as 61-year-old John R. Libeau, was transported to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center where he died Wednesday evening.
Police responded to a shooting and house fire at a two-story brick home in the 8800 block of Pete Wiles Road around 5:08 Wednesday morning.
When they arrived they found a man with a gunshot wound to the head. The garage attached to the home was fully on fire, officials said.
Police say it is likely that the man shot himself and set the house on fire. Fire officials found gas cans inside the home. Police have classified this case as a suicide.
Officials say that a preliminary investigation shows the man lived at the house and was going through a divorce which was finalized on Tuesday.
