WALDORF, Md. (WUSA9) -- A Waldorf man and woman were arrested after assaulting officers during a traffic stop related to a shoplifting case, according to Charles County Sheriff's Office authorities.
Last Thursday at 6:57 p.m., police say officers responded to Mall Circle for the report of a shoplifting. They found the suspects fleeing the area in a car, according to authorities. The officers stopped the car but a man got out and ran. He was caught by an officer. Authorities say he resisted arrest and assaulted the officers.
While the man was being arrested, authorities say a woman in the car "jumped on one of the officers and struck him with her knee."
Eventually, officers were able to subdue both suspects and arrest them.
Authorities say 20-year-old Randolph Eugene Woodland and 19-year-old Maryann Noreen Taruc of Waldorf were charged with two counts of second-degree assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, failure to obey a lawful order, theft, and destruction of property.
