PASADENA, Md. (WUSA9) - Officials say a state trooper is in serious condition after she was struck by a car while assisting another colleague during a traffic stop in Anne Arundel County around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Police say a K-9 trooper stopped a suspected drunk driver on eastbound Rt. 100. While a field sobriety test was being conducted, trooper Jacqueline Kline stopped at the scene to provide backup. According to authorities, both troopers' cars were marked, parked on the eastbound shoulder and had their overhead lights activated.

Officials believe as Kline got out of the vehicle, she was struck by a Nissan and hit the hood of the car then propelled into the back of the other K-9 car where she struck the back windshield and metal cage inside the car. She landed in a ditch near the highway. Kline sustained head injuries, a broken arm, cuts and contusions. She was flown to shock trauma.

No charges have been filed so far against driver Enrique Guzman, 21, of Pasadena who was behind the wheel of a 2007 Nissan Versa. Police say it appears Guzman was trying to exit for Catherine Avenue.

The K-9 inside the car was not injured. Guzman was not found to be driving under the influence but returning home after work. The first driver in question was only cited with a warning for speeding.

Rt. 100 was closed for a few hours.

Trooper Kline graduated from the Maryland State Police Academy in July 2012. Fellow officers are gathered at the hospital.
