PHILADELPHIA (WUSA9) -- A Ku Klux Klan rally was canceled Tuesday due to the government shutdown.

The KKK had a permit for a First Amendment demonstration at Gettysburg National Military Park, according to the Associated Press.

The permit was issued for Saturday but the government shut down at midnight on Tuesday closed all National Parks.

Park officials previously defended the KKK's right to use the land for exercising their freedom of speech.

Officials say the park has a responsibility to make that land available for citizens to exercise their right to freedom of speech, even if the views expressed are contrary to those of most Americans, the AP reported.
