MARRIOTTSVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A Howard County Police Department officer was injured in a collision Monday night while making a traffic stop, say police.

According to police, at approximately 11:37 p.m. Pfc. Neil White had pulled over a 2013 Ford Focus for a traffic violation on westbound I-70 in the area of Marriottsville Road. White's vehicle was then struck by a 2005 Chevrolet pick-up truck. The officer's vehicle was then pushed into the back of the Ford Focus.

Police say the 38-year-old officer was injured and flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. The ten-year veteran of the police department is listed in "stable condition," according to police.

The drivers of the two vehicles were not injured.

Police tell us the driver of the Chevrolet pick-up is 20-year-old Curt Michal Smith of Toneytown, Md. Police say they are looking into the possibility that Smith may have fallen asleep before the collision.

I-70 westbound was closed until about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday for the investigation and clean-up. Westbound traffic was detoured onto the eastbound side.
