(WUSA9) --  The park honoring the late Godfather of Go-Go is closer to becoming reality Thursday. D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, Chuck Brown's family and band will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the Chuck Brown Memorial Park.

They will unveil designs for the renovations of part of the Langdon Park on 20th Street NE that will honor Brown's memory.

According to the mayor's office, "The design includes a memorial wall encircling a new public plaza as well as outdoor toy drums that will link the memorial to an existing playground. The plaza can be used for entertainment, with surrounding grass for sitting or dancing. Other renovations to be made to the surrounding park include new benches, trash receptacles, more lighting and enhancements to the dog park."

Thursday is Chuck Brown's birthday and last year, Mayor Gray designated August 22 as Chuck Brown Day in the District.

Thursday night, the Chuck Brown Birthday Bash takes place at the Howard Theatre. The Chuck Brown All-Star Band (Frank "Scooby" Marshall, Chuck's daughter KK, D Floyd, Sweet Cherie, the Horny Horns, Kenny "Kwickfoot" Gross, Mighty Moe Hagans, Marcus Young, and Karlston "Ice" Ross), Buggs from Junkyard, Sugar Bear from E.U., and Michelle Blackwell of Chocolate City will honor the Godfather of Go-Go on his birthday. The celebration is standing room only. Tickets are $20 (http://on.wusa9.com/175CkMB). Doors open at 6 p.m. but the show starts at 8 p.m.

A quick note: Howard Theatre and Ben's Chili Bowl also celebrate birthdays today.
