WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- In the wake of the second sext scandal from former Congressman and NYC mayoral hopeful Anthony Weiner, many are asking how can his wife, Huma Abedin, stand by her man?

Who can forget that day in June 2011 when Weiner was asked about a picture of his clothed erection sent to a woman from his Twitter account?

Weiner responded, "This was a hoax, it was committed on me, it was relatively easy to make fun of my name." Then, days later, Weiner admitted it was he who sent the snapshot. He admitted to various transgressions and added," I love my wife very much, and we have no intention of splitting up over this." He later resigned from Congress, while a pregnant Abedin stood by him.

Now, a new sext scandal has come to light.

Weiner explained Tuesday, "I have said that other texts and photos were likely to come out and today they have."

It is surprising to many that the sext conversations in question between Weiner and a 22-year-old woman were sent a year after Weiner's resignation, when he and wife Huma were presumably working things out. Perhaps more surprising is that Abedin is still standing by her man.

In that same Tuesday press conference, Abedin told a crowd of reporters, "Anthony has made some horrible mistakes both before he resigned from Congress and after. But I do very strongly believe that its between us and our marriage.... It took a lot of work, and a whole lot of therapy."

Sure, you and I probably know wives who've stood by their man, but the political playbook may require something very different.

Perhaps Abedin took a page from mentor Hillary Clinton, who she has worked alongside since 1996. Clinton is presumably the most visible and politically successful woman who's stood by her man, former President Bill Clinton. She's also a possible 2016 Presidential candidate.

There is no shortage of news footage to pull from for his story. Silda Wall Spitzer stood by then-governor Eliot as he resigned in 2008 amidst a prostitution scandal, but you don't see her much these days, even as he runs for NYC's Comptroller. You also don't see Holly Petraeus much after her husband David's affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell. Elizabeth Edwards stood by husband John almost until the end. Former South Carolina Governor Marc Sanford's wife Jenny filed for divorce after he disappeared from radar in June 2009 to meet up with his mistress in Argentina.

Still the question remains, why do some women stick it out and some hang it up?

Lanny Davis is a lawyer, political crisis manager and friend of Huma Abedin and says,"It's a question that a lot of women especially legitimately ask. I know Huma is a great, great, human being, she loves Anthony Weiner, she loves her son and she believes in her family but she's going through a difficult, difficult challenge and what she said yesterday was her decision to say, nobody else's."

Davis warns no one knows what it's like to be in another's relationship, heart and mind.
