WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The role of women in the military is changing. Leaders are ready to to eliminate the obstacles preventing women from holding thousands of combat and special operations jobs near the front lines.

Tuesday, the Department of Defense released the U.S. military services' and U.S. Special Operations Command's plans for allowing women to serve in previously closed positions.
Congress has to be notified before opening these positions, says the Department Of Defense.

The DOD says full implementation should occur by Jan. 1, 2016.
