MYERSVILLE, Md. (WUSA) -- Two girls died in a fire in Myersville on Thursday, confirm Frederick County officials. Four other people were taken to hospitals.

The fire happened at a home in the 3900 block of Highland Avenue on Thursday night at approximately 11:20. Firefighters tried to go inside the house to rescue two girls who were reportedly inside but they couldn't reach them in time due to the heavy fire. The girls were trapped inside and died.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted autopsies for 6-year-old Sophie Lillard and 3-year-old Madigan Lillard. It was determined that both girls died of smoke inhalation. Their deaths were accidental.

Angela and Sadie Lillard were later released from the hospital.

A volunteer firefighter from Middletown Volunteer Fire Company was also taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Authorities say that the home was a total loss with an estimated loss of $200,00.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
